Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Wed, April 14, 2004 - 9:13 PMWell perhaps the corrilation of blue to house and red to minitaur(sp), is a Simple Phycological catch. Red Corilating with something bad, or a warning(sign), or blood, also red being a color that is usually connected to such emotions as anger, and Rage.
The Fact that "minitaur" is the word written in red may also have its own phycological hooks. a Minitaur being a feirce, scary deformation of the human figure....I does bring to mind some interesting images.
Now to the blue. Blue has all sorts of interesting Phycological hooks. First its a Color conneted to calm and tranquility, not to mention many shades of blue are used to represent two things that are the most vital things for life, those being; air and water.
House written in blue. Well lets just look at what a house usually symbolises. It is a form of protection, from both the elaments and the people on the outside. It is one of the few things that many people think is truly theirs. Its saposed to be a sanctuary.
thats pritty much what I got right now, well there is also the obvios opposition of red and blue and of there connection to other "realms" i.e. Hell and Heaven respectivly. -

Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Wed, April 14, 2004 - 9:22 PMWhat about a couple of less cerebral choices? Perhaps something as simple as blue print = blueprint, a visual pun, if you will. Or what of blue screens like in the movies? Nothing exists until it's placed in the background. Perhaps the significance is that each person in the house painted their own background/version/thought/interpretation or in a classical sense, created their own hell...

Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Thu, April 15, 2004 - 2:53 AMyeah i agree with whats being said. also, i believe, that the blue somehow triggers a likeliness to website hyperlinks. originally, most of the internet used those blue hyperlinks. i see it similar to the house because it has a multi-dimensional sense to it. like, 'this house will lead you somewhere else entirely' ...

Thu, April 15, 2004 - 8:50 AM> the internet used those blue hyperlinks
And of course copies of HoL were spread about the 'net. I used to think there was something to that, and perhaps there is, but I don't find the reasoning to be satisfying... -

Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Thu, April 15, 2004 - 11:37 PMonly HOUSE was in blue though....
if it was plural, the s would be black.
what did you make of that?
I think I like the hyperlink theory, although hyperlinks can be a lot of colours in some cases....

Which brings me to another point. The word HOUSE appears in blue throughout, yet the word "house" isn't always a reference to "the house".
As an aside, I'll bet MZD is sitting in his house laughing his ass off at all of the discussions that go on over the meaning of this, that, and the other in HoL. -

Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Fri, April 16, 2004 - 4:29 PMwell, just think about how trippy it would be to have to write a "book review" on HoL. i've thought about that idea.. usually when i read books, and i read a lot, i like to make my own little notes about the book. the trippy part is (, obviously?, ) HoL is a book basically reviewing an essay, reviewing a film (a fictional film btw, just like the novel). anyway, i don't know whether i explained myself well or not, but bottom line is: writing a review for HoL would be a trip. -

Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Fri, April 16, 2004 - 4:35 PMNearly impossible, I would think. It's difficult enough to try to explain what the book is about to people who haven't read it, especially if they have no idea who Nabokov is. -

Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Fri, April 16, 2004 - 8:41 PMyeah, I liked how last names with House in german was in blue.
and, to quote Kevin Spacy from the Usual Suspects:
"the greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was to convince the world that he didn't exist."
I had a hard time remembering HoL was fiction.
MD is a true genious, and discussion of his work borderlines discussion of Tool's music.
All of us wonder if Maynard sits around laughing at all the attempts to figure the material out.

Fri, April 16, 2004 - 9:16 PMMZD isn't nearly as lucid as Maynard... probably by design -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Sat, April 17, 2004 - 4:26 AMhey, thats bring up a topic i read somewhere when i first picked up HoL. does anyone listen to music while you read HoL. The first way through i read it in silence(/natural noises)but now, re-reading i also tend to occasionally read with tunes playing. my first contribution:

songs: any.

Re: Something Basic to Start With...
Sat, April 17, 2004 - 2:45 PMHavn't heard Haunted but I would like to....
Mourad, you rock man.
Explosions and Godspeed both kick a lot of ass.
I feel kind of out of it that I never read to those bands.
The one that freaked me out the most was Lateralus by Tool.
The whole album, at night, with HoL, especially when JT was going on about killing gnadsk man and raping karrie.
i was listening to Mantra during that part,
holy god.
incredible.
Made it that much more intense.
Tool is one of the only bands I would describe as dark.
